Auditions for the upcoming production of Acts of Atonement are set for May 18 and 19 at Court Square Theater at 6:00. Acts of Atonement is brought to you by the same producers and director as the very popular and successful Can't Feel at Home from several years ago - about the displacement of the mountain people during the formation of Shenandoah National Park. Acts of Atonement is a stand-alone sequel to that show and is set in 1969, a year of many changes. The main character is the now grown up Luther, who has indeed become a lawyer.
Please bring a memorized and prepared 1 minute monologue which shows you bringing a character to life. Please do not simply recite lines - like a school child reciting a poem for English class - NOT what we need. We will also do readings from the script and other activities. .
(F) Narrator, 30’s - 60’s, sincere, empathetic (much smaller role than the narrator in Can’t Feel at Home.)

(m) Young Luther Lamm, 12, Wren’s son, only in several solo 1936 CFAH flashback scenes
(M) Governor Peery, 40’s/50’s, (1 scene - double with Pastor Henry?) Pompous aggressive politician
(F) The Mountain Spirit, several scenes, symbolic representation, (similar to Mother Earth) no spoken lines but is often talked about, group singing

(f) Julie, 12, Luther’s youngest child, minor character with several very good moments, sweet and sensitive, well-liked, empathetic, very positive relationship with mother - they really talk
(M) Luther Lamm, main character, 40’s, immensely dedicated but facing multiple difficulties, husband, father, lawyer, member of the Virginia House of Delegates, currently running for Governor. Raised on the mountain until he was 12 years old and was part of the forced eviction. He has spent his life fighting for the forgotten and downtrodden.
(F) Debbie Appleton, 20’s/30’s, energetic, honest and dedicated journalist, willing to pay the price to get it right, consumed by the job and the ‘calling’, bold
(M) Pastor Henry (bad leg - cane), 50’s/60’s, caring official with a sense of humor,
established and respected community member, lived entire life there, backbone of the community, person everyone goes to for wisdom
(M) Ethan, 18, Luther’s eldest child, expected to be a lawyer like his father, well-rounded youth caught in the turmoils of 1969 issues, strong scenes with father
(F) Stevie, 19, Ethan’s friend, druggie musician (bass guitar) who joins the Peace Corp to help the world. Fun and humorous role.
(M) Norm, 18, Ethan’s friend, nerdy, conservative, opposite to Stevie, not a hippy but is against the Vietnam war, has common sense but freaks out over draft and flees to Canada
